IV09 comes to Barcelona

The 13th International Conference on Information Visualisation will be hosted in Universitat Pompeu Fabra from the 14th of July and the 17th.
It is the first time that an Infovis conference will take place in Barcelona, so I hope that delegates will enjoy the city as much as we want to do with the conference.
I will also have the opportunity to present a couple of papers. The first one about WET for analysing websites and the second one for the visualisation of asynchronous conversations (aka forums ;) ).

Slashdot gets WET!

After a few weeks working, we finally have a new version of WET ready for representing online conversations. The idea came from a discussion with Andreas Kaltenbrunner, who has been interested, since long time ago, in the investigation of the analysis of online discussion forums.

From this work we have prepared a paper that have been submitted to IV09.

We have published an online demo of "Slashdot WET" here, within he web of the Content Analysis Workshop of the WWW'09 Conference.

Diari de la VisWeek (III)

Bé, la cosa s'acaba. Un setmana de conferència, de xerrades, de fer de voluntari, de conèixer gent, de menjar fast food, de "visitar" una "ciutat deserta"...
La veritat és que la VisWeek'08 ha estat una grandíssima experiència per mi. Tot i que pugui semblar avorrit, aquí tothom parla del mateix, i no per fer negocis precisament, sino per compartir i ajudar a la resta.

No tinc massa més a dir de moment. Quan pugui penjaré fotos al meu Flickr.

Salut, ens veiem d'aquí molt poc!!

Diari de la Visweek (II)

Bé, la idea era anar escrivint de tant en tant, però ara resulta que ja han passat 5 dies i mig des de que sóc aquí, i no havia tornat a escriure.
Bé, el resum de tot plegat és molt positiu. La conferència està molt ben organitzada, i el nivell és realment espectacular. És realment curiós estar davant de totes aquelles persones que surten a tots aquells "llibres i articles clau" en la Visualització de la Informació.
Pel que fa a mi, el ritme de vida de la conferència és força alt. La jornada comença a les 8:30 del matí amb les primeres xerrades, i acostuma a acabar al voltant de les 20h, alternant més xerrades i algunes tasques com a voluntari. Després acabo sopant amb gent que he conegut per aquí, cerveseta, i a dormir, perquè estem tots fets pols!
La veritat és que l'ambient a les conferències és realment genial. Es nota que la gent no ve aquí "perquè l'empresa o la universitat li mana", sino que la gent ve a compartir els seus coneixements i idees.

Bé, ens veiem d'aquí molt poc!!

Diari de la VisWeek (I)

Aquest post el vaig escriure ahir. Estava cansat i agobiat... no es nota? ;)

Bé, com que estic avorrit, i tinc una bona estona per ocupar, he pensat que podria començar escrivint una mica tot el que vaig fent. Com que vull seguir mantenint una mica el caràcter "internacional" d'aquest blog, em sembla que escriuré els posts d'opinió del que vaig veient en català, i els posts en relació a la conferència en anglès. Ni jo mateix se perquè escric amb anglès, però mira, així faig practicing. ;)

Ara mateix sóc a l'aeroport de Newark (NY). Són les 16:54 hora local, i les 22:54 hora catalana. He sortit de casa a les 6:30 del matí, així que la veritat és que estic força rebentat. I el més fotut és que el meu vol cap a Columbus (Ohio), va amb retràs... A un a vegades li sembla que USA és un país avançat en quant a tecnologia, transports, etc. Però òbviament, no és veritat. Aquí hi ha els mateixos retrassos que tenim nosaltres. :D Ja m'ho ha dit un operari d'aquí, "aquí els vols nacionals van fatal. A la mínima que passa algo hi ha retrassos!!". I "voila" (s'escriu així??), hora i mitja de retràs.

Si que és cert que avui en dia és fàcil viatjar, però osti, si et pares a pensar... entre les dues hores abans que has d'arribar a l'aeroport per fer el check in i tota la pesca, el retràs pertinent que porta l'avió (el meu de BCN a NY també ha anat amb una hora de retràs!), les 8 horetes de viatge, amb àpats que van 100% a deshora de tots dos llocs (origen i destí!), les mil revisions de seguretat (només els ha faltat preguntar-me la meva talla de gallumbus), els retrassos a les connexions dels vols... Osti tu, com cansa això!!!

Pels que no ho sabieu, sóc a NY de camí a Ohio per assistir a la VisWeek'08, una conferència de Visualització de la Informació que de fet, engloba tres conferències: "Visualisation", "Visual Analytics (VAST)" i "Information Visualisation". Jo concretament participaré al col·loqui d'estudiants de doctorat, i presentaré a la sessió de posters de la VAST. A més, per fer aquest viatget més baratet, també sóc "burruntari"!!! Si, com als jocs olímpics però en versió conferència. En principi hauré de fer feines relacionades amb l'organització de la conferència com moure posters d'un lloc a l'altre, recollir les preentacions dels ponents, etc. En fi, qualsevol cosa que es necessiti. Suposo que serà una altra manera de relacionar-se amb la gent d'aquí, tot i que em tocarà currar!! Espero que no ens explotin massa!!!

Bueno tu, que ara m'estic adonant que estic escrivint un rollo bastant "heavy", així que vaig plegant. No se si tindrà massa sentit tot el que he dit, perquè no m'ho penso rellegir. ;) Ara ja són les 17:14 i encara em queden gairebé dues hores d'espera ("Expected departure time: 18:52"). Quin pal! De seguida que tingui conenxió penjaré aquest post.

Apple and GMail

Since one month ago I'm owner of a wonderful iPhone! Yeah, the gadget I've been dreaming of since it appeared on the WWDC back in January'07.

Since I started to receive my emails online in my Apple Mail and in my iPhone, I decided to enable the IMAP protocol of my GMail account. At the very first time everything seemed perfect... However, from time to time I've been realising that there are some emails that do not appear in my main GMail inbox in both, Apple Mail and iPhone. There is no apparent reason, or rule enabled in Apple Mail that could affect the behaviour of such emails, so I've decided to dig into the Internet looking for an answer to my problem.

By now, I've just seen this post in the Apple Disuccion Forums which definitely shows that I'm not the only one! The header of this thread says

This question is not answered. "Helpful" answers available: 2 . "Solved" answers available: 1

Suspiciously this thread has been archived by Apple. What happens with our "lost" emails? Please Apple, solve this really annoying issue!!!

Internet Marketing Conference

Yesterday I attended to the first International Marketing Conference in Barcelona and presented the tool we have been developing at the Universitat Pompeu Fabra and Fundació Barcelona Media.

The conference was really interesting and enriching!!

Well, I've finally decided to start up my new blog.
I don't know if I will post very frequently, but since long time ago I've been willing to have my own blog to express my ideas and thoughts, so here I am!
